What this document is

TA.1 (“Solicitud de afiliación a la Seguridad Social, asignación de número de Seguridad Social y variación de datos”) is the official form of Spain’s General Treasury of Social Security (TGSS). It is used to obtain a Social Security number (NSS, also called número de afiliación), to register with the system for the first time (afiliación) or to correct your data: address, identity document, surname.

You need an NSS to work as an employee, to register as self-employed (autónomo), and for healthcare and benefits. The number is assigned once for life and is not the same as the NIE.

Who files it and where

  • a foreigner or Spanish citizen who has no NSS yet — for example before a first job or studies with an internship;
  • a worker whose data has changed (new NIE instead of a passport, a move, a change of surname);
  • filing — at an Administración de la Seguridad Social or the TGSS Provincial Directorate for your home (or employer’s) address, or online through Import@ss — even without Cl@ve, using a photo of your ID and a selfie;
  • an employer must request the affiliation before a new worker starts; if the employer files it, the employer signs the employer’s signature box.

What to attach

  • an identity document: DNI, foreigner card (NIE/TIE) or passport — a passport is accepted only for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens;
  • with a recognised disability — the certificate of its degree;
  • if something is missing, the TGSS asks you to complete the application or bring documents within 10 days (the «Subsanación» part).

The decision takes up to 45 days; if none is issued, the application may be deemed approved (as the form states). The office stamps the receipt on page 3.

How the form is laid out

Four pages: the application (applicant’s details, address, type of request, notification address, signatures), instructions, a filing receipt with a “Subsanación” part for the office, and data-protection information. Write in capital letters. FoxDocs types your data into the fields of the official PDF without changing its layout; the NSS and document number are repeated on the receipt automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How is the NSS different from the NIE?

The NIE is the foreigner identity number issued by the police. The NSS is your number in the Social Security system, assigned by the TGSS. To work in Spain you need both.

Do I need a job contract to get an NSS?

No. You can get the number in advance by choosing “Asignación de número de Seguridad Social”. Affiliation when you start working is usually handled by the employer.

Can I apply with a passport and no NIE?

The form accepts a passport as the identity document only for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens. Everyone else needs a foreigner card with an NIE.

How much does it cost?

The official TGSS pages do not mention any fee for filing TA.1, and Import@ss is the official online service with nothing to pay separately. It is best to confirm with the TGSS before filing.

How long does it take?

The maximum time to decide, as stated on the form, is 45 days; without an answer by then the application may be deemed approved. Online through Import@ss you can apply at any time.

What goes into “Causa de la variación”?

Only for a change of data: briefly, in Spanish, e.g. CAMBIO DE DOMICILIO or OBTENCIÓN DE NIE.

Do I fill in the lower part of page 3?

No. The “Subsanación” part is filled in by the TGSS if something is missing from your application.
