What this document is

PF-5 (“Solicitud de prestación por hijo a cargo con discapacidad”) is the official form of Spain’s National Social Security Institute (INSS). It is used to claim the allowance (asignación económica) for a child or foster child with a disability.

By law (LGSS, art. 351) the allowance covers a child under 18 with a disability of 33 % or more, and a child aged 18 or over with 65 % or more.

Who files and where

  • a parent, adoptive parent, foster carer or guardian who lives legally in Spain and supports the child; the child must also live in Spain (LGSS, art. 352);
  • for an adult child with support measures, a de facto guardian, curator or judicial defender may file — section 1.3 is for them;
  • online at the Social Security e-office (certificate or Cl@ve); without an e-signature, the hand-signed form by post or at an INSS centre (CAISS) by appointment;
  • shared and non-shared children go on separate applications, as the form’s instructions require.

What the form asks

  • applicant: DNI/NIE, Social Security number, address, capacity, marital status, large-family certificate;
  • work and benefits of the applicant and of the other parent;
  • up to three children per sheet: personal details, who they live with, income, disability degree, need for third-party help;
  • tax residence, address for letters, IBAN of a Spanish account; a separate account if an adult child receives the benefit directly.

What to bring

  • DNI or NIE and TIE of the applicant, the other parent and children over 14;
  • the child’s disability certificate (IMSERSO or the regional body) or proof that it was applied for;
  • family book (libro de familia) or birth certificates; for large families — the large-family certificate;
  • in case of divorce, separation or guardianship — the court ruling or guardianship document.

Frequently asked questions

What disability degree is required?

For a child under 18 — 33 % or more; for a child aged 18 or over — 65 % or more (LGSS, art. 351).

Can a foreign national apply?

Yes, if they live legally in Spain and the child also lives in Spain. Nationality does not matter.

How long does the INSS take?

According to the form, up to 45 days from registration or from when missing documents are provided. No answer means the claim is deemed refused, and you can ask for a decision.

What if there are more than three children?

The sheet has room for three. For the others the INSS asks for additional sheets.

Does the benefit stop if the child works?

Not necessarily: under the LGSS the child stays dependent if living with the applicant and earning no more than the minimum wage (SMI) a year.

What if I refuse consent to data checks?

Then you must bring the required documents yourself within 10 working days of being notified.

Can an adult child receive the benefit into their own account?

Yes, if over 18 and managing their own affairs: section 7 is filled in with their IBAN and they sign as well.
