What this document is
EX-20 (“Solicitud Documento de residencia Artículo 50 TUE para nacionales del Reino Unido”) is the official form a UK national living in Spain under the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement uses to apply for the residence document under Article 18.4 of the Agreement. The form is in Spanish and has three pages: two to fill in and one of instructions.
EX forms are only accepted in their official version: FoxDocs just writes your details into the fields of the official PDF without changing its layout.
Who applies and where
- a UK national who lived in Spain before the end of the transition period (31 December 2020), and British family members covered by the Agreement;
- the form is for people without an EU certificado de registro; those who have one get the document directly from the police with form EX-23;
- it is filed at the Oficina de Extranjería of the province where you live: in person with a cita previa appointment, through a representative or electronically;
- if your right of residence began after the transition period (for example, a family member who arrived later), apply within three months of arrival; if you are late, the office assesses the reasons;
- the same form is used for permanent residence after five years, a change of details and deregistration;
- family members who are not British themselves use a different form, EX-21.
What the form asks
- personal details: passport, NIE (if any), surnames, given name, sex (H/M/X), date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy), place and country of birth, nationality, marital status, father’s and mother’s names;
- address in Spain, mobile phone and e-mail; legal representative, if any;
- representative filing the application (section 2), address for notifications (section 3), consent to DEHú electronic notifications;
- section 4: the date you started living in Spain and the number of relatives accompanying or joining you in Spain;
- type of application: temporary residence (employee, self-employed, not working with funds and insurance, student, family member of another UK national), permanent residence, change of details or deregistration;
- declaration of accuracy, place, date, signatures and the addressee office (DIR3 code and province).
Documents usually needed
- form EX-20, original and copy, filled in in capital letters;
- a valid passport; if it has expired, a copy of it and of the renewal application;
- proof of the date you started living in Spain (any lawful evidence is accepted);
- documents for your basis: work, autónomo registration, sufficient funds and health insurance, studies;
- for a family member, proof of the relationship and that the UK national giving the right meets the conditions;
- the exact list depends on the office — check in advance.
What happens next
- on filing you get a receipt (resguardo) that proves your legal stay until the document is issued;
- the decision is made and notified within a maximum of three months; if documents are missing you get 10 working days to complete them;
- within one month of a favourable decision you go in person to the police with form EX-23, your passport, a photo and the receipt for fee 790 code 012 — check the amount on the police website;
- a temporary document is issued for 5 years, a permanent one for 10 years.
