What this document is

J-6 (“Solicitud de pensión de jubilación”) is the official form of Spain’s National Social Security Institute (INSS) to claim the contributory retirement pension. It is also where you choose early or delayed retirement and combining the pension with work (active or flexible retirement).

If you have worked in other countries, the first page warns that another form is needed — the EU Regulations form (EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) or J-6 CB under bilateral agreements.

Who can apply

  • anyone insured with Social Security who has reached pension age: in 2026, 66 years and 10 months, or 65 with at least 38 years and 3 months of contributions;
  • the minimum is 15 years of contributions, 2 of them within the last 15 years;
  • early — with a long contribution record (voluntary) or after involuntary dismissal;
  • filing — online at the Social Security electronic office, by post or at an INSS centre (CAISS) by appointment.

What you will need

  • NIE/DNI or passport, Social Security number, address;
  • the date you want the pension from and your current situation (working, on benefit, special agreement);
  • your children’s details — for childcare credits and the gender-gap supplement;
  • this year’s income, details of your spouse and relatives living with you — for tax and minimum top-ups;
  • a Spanish bank account (IBAN) in the applicant’s name.

How the form is laid out

Fourteen pages: personal details and representatives, employment situation and type of pension, working while retired, children, income, spouse and relatives, tax, notification address, bank, consents and signature; then the addendum — the employer’s consent for active retirement — and instructions. FoxDocs types your data into the fields of the official PDF without changing the layout.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreigner get a Spanish pension?

Yes, with the required contributions to Spanish Social Security. Periods in EU or treaty countries may count — then the EU Regulations form or J-6 CB is used instead.

When should I apply?

The requested pension date usually has to fall within three months before or after filing; people still working give their last working day.

What is delayed retirement?

Retiring after the ordinary age. Each full year earns a supplement: 4 % extra, a lump sum or a mix — chosen once, in the application.

Can I work and draw the pension?

Yes, under active or flexible retirement. Active retirement as an employee needs the addendum signed by the employer.

Why list my children?

Children give childcare credits and the gender-gap supplement (complemento para la reducción de la brecha de género).

Why income and relatives?

To work out IRPF withholding and entitlement to the minimum-pension top-up.

Do I need a Spanish bank account?

For payment in Spain, yes — in the applicant’s name. People living abroad can be paid by cheque or transfer to a foreign account.
