What this document is

EX-26 (“Modificaciones de autorizaciones”) is the official application to modify a current residence or stay permit in Spain: you move to a different type of permit instead of starting from scratch. The form is in Spanish and has three pages: two to fill in and one with instructions.

This edition of the form follows the Foreigners Regulation RD 1155/2024. EX forms are filed only in their official version: FoxDocs simply types your details into the fields of the official PDF without changing its layout.

Who files it and where

  • a foreign national holding a valid residence or stay permit in Spain who moves to another basis; every case is listed in section 5 of the form (articles 190–192 of the Regulation);
  • from a residence permit with or without the right to work — to employment or self-employment; the form distinguishes whether you have lived in Spain as a resident for less or more than a year;
  • from a seasonal work permit — to employment or self-employment;
  • holders of a work permit — to change occupation, business sector or territorial scope, or to add self-employment to employment;
  • from an EU citizen’s family member card or a Spanish national’s family member permit — to non-lucrative residence, employment, self-employment or residence exempt from a work permit;
  • from a stay for studies or training — to employment, self-employment, residence exempt from a work permit, job search or starting a business under Law 14/2013, and family reunification for a student’s relatives;
  • EX-26 cannot be used to switch from a family reunification permit (it has its own rules), a cross-border worker permit or certain permits on exceptional grounds — for example, for victims of gender-based or sexual violence or human trafficking (article 191.7 of the Regulation as amended by RD 316/2026);
  • filed at the Oficina de Extranjería or electronically; check the procedure and fee for your case in the ministry’s information sheet (hoja informativa).

What the form asks

  • section 1 — personal details: passport, NIE, surnames, given name, sex (H/M/X), date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy), place and country of birth, nationality, marital status, parents’ names, address in Spain, phone, e-mail, legal representative and whether you have children of school age;
  • section 2 — employer (if you move to employment): name, NIF/NIE, activity, CNAE code, registered address and company representative;
  • section 3 — representative filing the application, and section 4 — address for notifications and consent to electronic notifications (DEHú);
  • section 5 — one of 19 items: which permit you change from and to;
  • place, date, signature and, at the bottom, the authority the application is addressed to (DIR3 code and province).

What to bring

  • form EX-26 — original and a copy (as the form’s instructions require), filled in in capital letters;
  • your passport and proof of your current permit (TIE card or stay visa);
  • documents for the new basis — for example an employment contract or job offer, a business plan, proof of means: it depends on the item chosen;
  • the fee payment receipt, if a fee applies in your case;
  • the exact list for your case is in the ministry’s hoja informativa or at the Oficina de Extranjería.

How to fill it in with FoxDocs

  1. Tell the chat in any language what permit you have now, how long you have lived in Spain as a resident and what you want to switch to.
  2. The assistant picks the item in section 5, fills in the boxes in capitals, splits the date and NIE into their boxes and, if needed, adds the employer’s details.
  3. Download the PDF, check it, print it, sign by hand and file it together with a copy.

Frequently asked questions

What is form EX-26 for?

To change your current residence or stay permit in Spain into another one — for example from studies to work, or from a non-working residence to employment.

Which item in section 5 should I tick?

It depends on the document you hold now, how long you have lived in Spain as a resident and what you switch to. The FoxDocs assistant asks these questions and ticks the right item; if none fits, you need a different form.

Do I have to fill in the employer section?

Section 2 is filled in when you move to employment and have an employer. For self-employment, non-working residence or job search it is usually left empty.

What do “less than a year” and “more than a year” mean?

The items are grouped by how long you have already lived in Spain as the holder of a residence permit (residencia): under or over one year (article 191 of the Regulation). This determines the requirements and which permits you can switch to.

How much does it cost?

The form itself is free — it says so on it. The fee depends on the type of permit: check the amount and payment form in the information sheet (hoja informativa) on the ministry’s website.

Can I file a form filled in on a computer?

Yes. The instructions say official models may be reproduced by any printing method. FoxDocs types your data into the official PDF fields; you sign by hand.

Must I consent to electronic notifications?

For a private individual it is optional and requires a digital certificate or Cl@ve. Companies and representatives obliged to deal with the administration electronically receive notifications electronically anyway.

What happens after approval?

Follow the instructions in the decision. If it tells you to obtain a new foreigner’s card (TIE), there is a separate form EX-17 — you can also fill it in on FoxDocs.
