What this document is

The Customs Declaration Form for Thai or Foreign Currency or Negotiable Monetary Instruments (แบบแจ้งรายการเงินตราไทย หรือเงินตราต่างประเทศ หรือตราสารเปลี่ยนมือ) is a form of the Thai Customs Department (กรมศุลกากร). A traveller uses it to declare Thai baht, foreign currency and bearer negotiable instruments brought into or taken out of Thailand.

The form is bilingual (Thai and English) and is completed in block letters. Page 1 is the declaration itself, page 2 is a summary of the rules.

When a declaration is required

According to the notes on the back of the form, you must declare when entering or leaving Thailand with:

  • Thai currency or negotiable instruments with the payee’s name omitted worth over 450,000 baht;
  • foreign currency or such instruments worth over USD 15,000 or the equivalent in another currency;
  • any combination of the above worth over 450,000 baht or the equivalent.

For taking Thai banknotes and coins out of the country, the notes also require permission from the Bank of Thailand: over 2,000,000 baht when travelling to Vietnam, Yunnan Province (China) and countries bordering Thailand (Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia); over 50,000 baht when travelling to other countries.

According to the form, failing to declare or making a false declaration is a criminal offence. The thresholds are quoted from the official form; rules may change — check with Customs before travelling.

Who files it and where

The traveller — a Thai national or a foreigner — hands the declaration to a customs officer when passing through customs at any border checkpoint: an airport, a seaport or a land border.

The form states no fee.

What the form asks for

  • family name, first and middle name, nationality, passport number, date of birth, sex, occupation, home address;
  • arrival or departure, means of transport, flight or vehicle number, country of origin, transit countries and next destination;
  • cash amounts by currency (THB, USD, EUR, JPY, CNY, GBP and others);
  • bills of exchange, promissory notes, cheques and other instruments — amount and currency;
  • source of the funds and intended use (personal expenses, business, education, other);
  • date and signature; the “for official use only” box is completed by Customs.

What to have with you

  • your passport;
  • the cash and instruments listed in the declaration;
  • papers showing where the money comes from (bank statement, bank letter, contract) — the form asks for the source of funds; check with Customs whether they are needed in your case;
  • Bank of Thailand permission if you take out baht above the thresholds in the notes.

Frequently asked questions

When do I have to declare cash in Thailand?

According to the notes on the form — when carrying over 450,000 baht, over USD 15,000 in foreign currency, or a combined value over 450,000 baht (bearer instruments included). Check the current rules with Customs.

Is the declaration needed both on arrival and on departure?

Yes, the same form is used for both: item 1 has an ARRIVAL and a DEPARTURE box.

Where do I submit the declaration?

To a customs officer at the border checkpoint while passing through customs — at an airport, seaport or land border.

How much baht can I take out without Bank of Thailand permission?

According to the notes — up to 50,000 baht to most countries and up to 2,000,000 baht to Vietnam, Yunnan and neighbouring countries (Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia). Above that, permission is required. Check that this is still current with the bank or Customs.

What counts as a negotiable monetary instrument?

Bills of exchange, promissory notes, cheques and other bearer instruments on which the payee’s name is omitted and transfer is not restricted. Bank cards and money in an account are not included.

Which year do I write in the dates?

The Gregorian year: the form has “d d m m y y y y” boxes without a Buddhist Era mark. FoxDocs fills them in.

Is there a fee?

The form states no fee. If in doubt, ask Customs.
