What this document is

C-142 (“Solicitud de prestación por corresponsabilidad en el cuidado del lactante”) is the official form of Spain’s National Social Security Institute (INSS). It is used to claim a benefit for the period from 9 to 12 months of the child’s age when both parents (or adoptive parents, guardians with a view to adoption and permanent foster parents) reduce their working hours for the same length of time and under the same arrangement.

Both parents reduce their hours, but only one receives the benefit — the person named as applicant in section 1.1.

Who applies and where

  • according to the form’s instructions, only workers in the General Scheme (Régimen General); civil servants follow the rules of their own statute (EBEP);
  • online — at the Social Security e-office (sede.seg-social.gob.es) with a digital certificate or Cl@ve permanente;
  • without an electronic signature — via run.gob.es/tramites, by post (a signed copy) or at an INSS centre (CAISS) by appointment: 901 10 65 70 / 91 541 25 30;
  • the form states a 30-day time limit for a decision from registration; with no reply, the claim may be treated as refused.

What the form asks for

  • details of the applicant and the other parent (NIE or DNI, Social Security number) and whether it is a single-parent family;
  • the child’s details and, for adoption or foster care, the date of the decision;
  • start and end dates of the reduced hours for both parents — both sign section 3;
  • the province of tax residence: outside Navarre the benefit is exempt from IRPF withholding;
  • an IBAN in the applicant’s name — without it the benefit cannot be paid; consents and signature.

Documents usually brought along

  • identity documents of both parents: DNI, or for foreigners a passport plus NIE or TIE;
  • each parent’s employer certificate (“Certificado de empresa para la prestación por corresponsabilidad en el cuidado del lactante”) with the dates and percentage of the reduction;
  • the libro de familia, the child’s Civil Registry certificate or the adoption, guardianship or foster-care decision;
  • for a single-parent family — supporting evidence (for example a libro de familia showing one parent);
  • for a representative — proof of representation; foreign documents must be legalised.

How to fill it in with FoxDocs

  1. Tell the chat in any language about yourself, the other parent, the child and the dates of the reduced hours.
  2. The assistant writes the data in Latin capitals, splits the IBAN into the boxes, writes the signing month as a word and repeats your name and NIE in the page headers.
  3. Download the PDF, check it, sign section 3 together with the other parent and submit it to INSS.

Frequently asked questions

Do both parents receive the benefit?

No. Both reduce their working hours, but only one receives the benefit — the person named as applicant in section 1.1.

From what age of the child is the benefit paid?

According to the form’s instructions, from 9 to 12 months of age, provided the other conditions are met.

Can a civil servant or a self-employed person apply?

The form is for workers in the General Scheme. Civil servants follow the rules of their own statute (EBEP) instead of this benefit. The form’s instructions do not mention the self-employed (autónomos) — if you are self-employed, check with INSS.

Is tax withheld from the benefit?

According to the form, in common-regime Spain and the Basque Country the benefit is exempt from IRPF withholding. In Navarre you can choose a table or a voluntary rate.

What if I do not consent to INSS obtaining my data?

Then you must provide the documents INSS asks for yourself within 10 working days.

Does the other parent have to sign?

Yes. Section 3, with the dates of the reduced hours, is signed by both parents.

Do I need to fill in page five?

No. It is the INSS sheet for noting required documents and the receipt; the applicant does not fill it in.
