What this document is
“Atestado de vida para comprovação perante o INSS” is a form of Brazil’s National Social Security Institute (Instituto Nacional do Seguro Social, INSS) for people who receive a Brazilian pension or benefit and live abroad. A local notary certifies the signature, and an apostille is then added.
The INSS states that beneficiaries living abroad must prove they are alive once a year, in their birth month; otherwise payments are blocked and the benefit is suspended. This form can only be used in countries party to the Hague Apostille Convention. It is bilingual (Portuguese and English) and two pages long: the second page has instructions and INSS addresses.
Who files it and where
- an INSS beneficiary living abroad — a Brazilian or a foreign national;
- the signature is made before a local notary (or another authority with public faith), who certifies it as authentic; then an apostille is added — under the form’s instructions, within 30 days of notarisation;
- the finished document is uploaded in Meu INSS (service “Acordo Internacional – Solicitar Atualização de Atestado de Vida”) or posted to the INSS office for your country of residence — addresses are on page 2; the INSS does not accept it by e-mail;
- if you can go to a Brazilian consulate, you can get an “Atestado de Vida” there instead of using this form.
What the form asks
- full name, CPF, date and place of birth (city, state, country), profession;
- ID or passport number, date of issue, issuing authority, country;
- mother’s name and INSS benefit number — CPF and/or benefit number are mandatory;
- address abroad: full address, country, ZIP code, phone, e-mail;
- city, date, signature and the notary’s certification block.
What to bring
- to the notary — the unsigned form: you sign it in their presence;
- Brazilians — a passport (even expired) or a valid official Brazilian photo ID;
- foreign nationals — preferably a passport;
- notary and apostille fees depend on the country — ask the notary and the apostille authority.
How to fill it in with FoxDocs
- Fill in the cards on this page — each field has a hint.
- The assistant takes your data from your profile and asks only for what is missing: CPF, INSS benefit number, address abroad.
- Download the PDF, print it and sign before the notary, then get the apostille and send it to the INSS.
