What this document is
“Comunicação de Venda” (DRV – No. 0040) is an official form of the Vehicle Registration Directorate (Diretoria de Registro de Veículos) of DETRAN-RJ, the traffic department of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
DETRAN-RJ says to use it to report the sale of a vehicle while the seller waits for its transfer to the new owner. The form itself explains why: to avoid trouble from traffic offences that other people may commit later. Who files it and where
- the seller — the vehicle owner — files it; the signature “Assinatura do proprietário (Vendedor)” is handwritten;
- the form is filed with DETRAN-RJ together with the documents in the “Documentos Necessários” list;
- DETRAN-RJ may ask for the originals at any time to compare them with the copies;
- check on detran.rj.gov.br where and how the notice is accepted and whether a fee applies.
What the form asks for
- seller: name and social name (nome social), identity document and issuing body (órgão expedidor), CPF, Brazilian driving licence (CNH);
- seller’s address (street, number, complemento, CEP, state, city, neighbourhood), phones and e-mail;
- vehicle: licence plate (placa) and RENAVAM;
- buyer: name and social name, identity document, CPF, nationality (nacionalidade), place of birth (naturalidade);
- buyer’s address, phones and e-mail;
- the date in the line “Rio de Janeiro … de … de …”; the seller signs by hand.
What to bring
- identity document, CPF, proof of address (comprovante de residência) and driving licence (Carteira Nacional de Habilitação);
- a certified copy of the fully completed CRV, signed by seller and buyer, with both signatures notarised exclusively “por AUTENTICIDADE”;
- for a company — CNPJ, ID of the partner or representative and a copy of the company’s founding documents;
- the originals — DETRAN-RJ may ask to compare them with the copies.
