What this document is

TM.86 (ตม.86 คำขอเปลี่ยนประเภทการตรวจลงตรา) is a foreigner's application to the Thai Immigration Bureau to change the type of visa to a Non-Immigrant visa without leaving the country. The form states: "I wish to apply for a non-immigrant visa". It is bilingual (Thai and English) and has two pages.

Who files it and where

  • a foreigner already in Thailand on a tourist or transit visa who wants to switch to a Non-Immigrant visa (for example ED for study, O for family, B for business/work);
  • foreigners who entered without a visa (visa exemption) usually file a different form, TM.87; check with the office which form applies to you;
  • it is filed at the immigration office for the area where you stay, in advance, while your current permitted stay is still valid; check the minimum remaining stay with the office;
  • according to the form, the application must be made in person; the form states a fee of 2,000 baht, not refunded if the application is refused. Check the current amount with the office.

What the form asks for

  • the immigration office and the date of the application (Buddhist Era year, พ.ศ.);
  • title (Mr./Mrs./Miss — circled), family name, first name, middle name, age, date and place of birth, nationality;
  • passport number, date and place of issue, expiry date;
  • current kind of visa, means of transport, where you came from, port and date of the last arrival, TM.6 arrival card number (if any);
  • the reason — the Non-Immigrant category and its basis;
  • address in Thailand and the details of the person who wrote the application (usually the applicant);
  • signature or right thumb print by hand; a 4×6 cm photo is attached.

Documents usually brought along

  • passport and copies of the photo page, visa and latest entry stamp;
  • one 4×6 cm photograph (the form has a box for it);
  • documents supporting the new visa category (for example a school letter for ED, marriage documents for O, company documents for B) — the list depends on the category;
  • proof of address, such as the TM30 receipt, if the office asks for it.

The exact document list, fee, processing time and whether a change is possible for your nationality and status depend on the category and the office — check the Immigration Bureau website or the office in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the TM.86 form for?

To ask immigration to change your visa to a Non-Immigrant visa without leaving Thailand — for example from a tourist visa to an ED (study) or O (family) visa.

What is the difference between TM.86 and TM.87?

TM.86 is usually filed by holders of a tourist or transit visa, TM.87 by those who entered without a visa (visa exemption). Check with the immigration office which form you need.

Where do I submit TM.86?

At the immigration office for the area where you stay in Thailand. Check its address and hours on the Immigration Bureau website.

Can someone else submit it for me?

According to the form, the application must be made in person. Another person may fill in the form — they are named as the writer.

Which year do I write in the dates?

All dates on the form use the Buddhist Era (พ.ศ.): Gregorian year + 543. FoxDocs converts them automatically.

How much does a change of visa cost?

The form states a fee of 2,000 baht, not refunded if the application is refused. The amount may change — check with the office.

What do I write as the reason?

The Non-Immigrant category and its basis, briefly in English, for example "Non-Immigrant ED - study at Example University".
