What this document is

ตม.8 (TM.8, “Application for Re-entry Permit to Return into the Kingdom”) is a foreigner's request to the Thai Immigration Bureau for permission to come back while keeping their current permission to stay.

If a foreigner with a visa or extension leaves Thailand without a re-entry permit, the permission to stay normally ends on departure. The permit can be for a single entry or multiple entries.

Who needs it and when

  • foreigners with a long-stay visa or extension of stay (work, retirement, marriage, study, etc.) who plan to leave temporarily and return on the same permission;
  • it is applied for before leaving Thailand;
  • according to the form, the applicant must submit the application in person.

What the form asks for

  • place and date of writing (Buddhist Era year, พ.ศ.);
  • title, family name, first name, middle name, nationality, age, date and place of birth, occupation;
  • present address in Thailand: house no., road, tambol/khwaeng, amphoe/khet, province;
  • type of permit: single or multiple entries;
  • destination country, departure date, type of transportation, purpose of travel and approximate return date;
  • passport: country, place of issue, number, dates of issue and expiry;
  • category of the previous visa, where and when it was issued, arrival date and permitted-stay date;
  • signature or right thumb print by hand, photograph 4 × 6 cm.

All dates on the form use the Buddhist Era year (2026 → 2569). FoxDocs converts it automatically.

Documents usually brought along

  • passport and copies of the photo page, visa, latest entry stamp and extension;
  • one 4 × 6 cm photograph for the form;
  • fee: single and multiple permits cost different amounts and, according to the form, the fee is non-refundable — check current amounts with immigration.

The document list and procedure depend on the office — check the Immigration Bureau website before you go.

Where to submit

At the Immigration Bureau office responsible for where you stay. Some international checkpoints also issue re-entry permits — check in advance whether this is available where you leave.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a re-entry permit?

So that your current permission to stay (visa or extension) is not cancelled when you leave Thailand. Without it, it normally ends on departure.

What is the difference between single and multiple re-entry?

A single permit covers one trip; a multiple permit covers any number of trips until your permitted stay ends. Fees differ — check with immigration.

Can someone else submit it for me?

The form states that the applicant must submit the application in person.

Which year goes into the dates?

Every date on the form is marked พ.ศ. — the Buddhist Era year (2026 → 2569). FoxDocs converts it automatically.

Which visa category do I tick if I entered visa-free?

Tick Others and specify, for example VISA EXEMPTION. Leave the visa place and date of issue empty.

Is the fee refunded if the permit is refused?

According to the form, the fee is non-refundable whatever the decision.

Do I need a photo?

Yes, the form has a place for a 4 × 6 cm photograph.
